Lt. G. E. Herne has arrived back in India, where he is greeted by Arbuthnot. He begins to tell the story of calamity that happened to Captain Burton and his expedition in Somalia.

This account of the Burton expedition comes from “First Footsteps in East Africa,” by Richard Burton. Many of the descriptions given by Herne in this chapter come directly from Burton’s own words in his book. The use of these phrases and descriptions is hereby acknowledged, with gratitude to Mr. Burton, who’s words could not have been expressed more eloquently.
